Villa description
Located within a few yards of the mile-long beach at Long Bay on Tortola’s north-western coast, Van Dyke House is a newly renovated villa with three bedrooms and three bathrooms offering good-quality accommodation for a total of up to six guests. The villa is reached via a sweeping driveway leading up from the road to a parking area – the property is just 65 feet above sea level – and from here a flight of steps brings you, via the front door, to the split-level living areas. The living room is a peaceful retreat in which to read a book, watch TV, or listen to music. Double patio doors in the living room slide open to a deep verandah with generously cushioned chairs and chaise lounges. This is a wonderful spot for total relaxation while you listen to the ocean just a few feet below. The kitchen, equipped with all the facilities you might require to prepare even the most complex of meals, is located on the upper level, to the rear of the living room. Also conveniently adjacent to the kitchen and the living room is the formal dining area. To the east of the living area – and also accessed from the kitchen door – is a patio area with gas BBQ, and another dining area in which to enjoy alfresco meals while enjoying panoramic views of the ocean. The second pavilion, on the other side of the patio, houses all three of the bedrooms. The master bedroom is a king, and is situated at the front of the property to enjoy spectacular ocean views from the sliding patio door and the small private balcony beyond it. The second bedroom to the rear (king or twin beds) has its own door, and also a sliding patio door to the side of the building. Both of these bedrooms are of a good size, and have modern en suite bathrooms with glass-block shower areas. Outside the second bedroom is a private patio with a table and chairs, and from here a flight of steps leading down the side of the house, through a gate, to the small pool. Exterior steps lead down to the third bedroom, which is smaller than the other. Van Dyke House is perfectly positioned to offer views of the island’s famously glorious sunsets, and is just yards from the beautiful beach at Long Bay. Smuggler’s Cove for good snorkeling, and Apple Bay/Capoon’s Bay for excellent surfing is also nearby. |

Trudi's personal opinion I really like Van Dyke House. It has been renovated to a good standard and offers air conditioning in all rooms, including the living area, which is most unusual to see in a villa of this price range in the BVI. It feels a wonderfully cheerful place, too; just what you need to shake off the cares of the world. The outdoor spaces are lovely – I particularly like the balcony off the living room, and I could easily spend many hours there, either reading a book or simply gazing at the multi-coloured hues of the turquoise ocean below. I am also quite taken with the patio between the two pavilions – an inviting little oasis. The majority of villas on Tortola are located hillside to benefit from the breathtaking ocean views, but you don’t have to be too far above sea level to be mesmerized by them – Van Dyke House, at rather less than a hundred feet above the ocean, proves that. I have no hesitation in recommending Van Dyke House – it’s genuinely a delightful villa. |

Reviews of Van Dyke House I would rate Van Dyke House as very good. The house met our expectations, the location exceeded our expectations. You could not have been in a better location. We had the privacy of our own villa, with the beach right at the end of the driveway - and it is by far the top, or one of the top beaches on the island. On arrival, the on-island managers were there to greet us, showed us around the house and made sure we were set up and good to go prior to leaving us. As well, they responded to any needs we had during the holiday. I know you're not supposed to spend that much time inside... but more comfortable seating in the living room area would go along way. As well, I would highly recommend a stash of beach toys (boogie boards, etc), some beach chairs and a cooler or two. Best of BVI were very professional, timely responses and very helpful staff. JS, Jan 2013 Manager's response: There is a cooler at the villa, the boogie boards get battered so quickly though that we do not have them at the villa anymore, especially where there is a lot of coral and rock. Comfortable furniture for the living room is the next big purchase. Van Dyke House was very nice, clean and well-equipped with very good facilities. The villa met our expectations and we would recommend it to others. We pre-ordered provisions and everything we ordered was there and waiting for us! And the beer was cold! We found the booking process easy, prompt and accurate and were totally satisfied with Best of BVI.
