Villa description
Spacious, secluded and comfortable, Allamanda Estate is ideally positioned among lush flower gardens on a six-acre hilltop. It offers stunning ocean and hillside views in every direction, including the islands of Salt, Ginger and Cooper, as well as Virgin Gorda to the east, and also benefits from cooling tropical breezes. From 1998 to 2004 this beautifully maintained property was the official residence of the Governor of the British Virgin Islands. It has recently been refurbished, before being decorated and furnished in an intriguing mix of Chinese, Indian and Indonesian styles.

The house is approached via an imposing, sweeping driveway. From the main entrance guests pass into a welcoming gallery, the windows on its right-hand side casting plenty of light onto the eye-catching original artworks on the facing wall, which also has doors to first the kitchen and then the traditional drawing-room. The gallery floor is tiled – as are most throughout the house – and has a number of colourful Persian-style rugs. The gallery also has a desk, an Internet-enabled personal computer, and a fax machine.

Newly remodelled, the kitchen offers all the storage space, appliances and facilities that you would expect of such a top-quality property, including a water cooler and naturally a dishwasher. It also has a convenient breakfast bar for light meals if guests should wish not to use either the dining-room or the more casual dining table and chairs nearby. The drawing-room has three thickly cushioned sofas and an equally welcoming armchair positioned around a substantial square coffee table, in addition to well-stocked bookcases. Ceiling fans help to keep the room cool. Adjacent to the drawing-room, and accessed from it via large double doors, is the formal dining-room. This has ample space for up to 10 guests seated around a beautiful dark-wood rectangular table, and again a number of striking original artworks on the walls. Conveniently, the dining-room can also be accessed direct from the kitchen. From these dining and living areas, sliding glass patio doors lead to a partly covered wide terrace, overlooking the south side of Beef Island and then the ocean beyond. This attractive area is paved with the beautifully variegated locally sourced stone, and bounded by a low wall above the adjacent gardens.

Located within the same pavilion as the dining and living areas, the spacious, air-conditioned king master bedroom has a four-poster bed and an en suite bathroom, the latter with both a Jacuzzi-style bathtub and a bidet. The suite opens out to an ‘L’-shaped covered verandah with a large daybed in the Balinese style. Between the drawing-room and the master bedroom is a smaller suite which can be made up with either twin beds – allowing parents to have their children safely nearby overnight – or, if required, one king.

From the gallery, double wooden doors open out to the beautifully rounded pool, set in a terrace of flagstones and tiles, and surrounded by mature palm trees. A number of comfortably cushioned chaise lounges offer plenty of options for relaxing in peace and quiet. At one end of the pool terrace is another well-shaded verandah, luxuriously furnished with softly cushioned wicker chairs and a large TV, as well as tables for games and casual dining. There is also a wet bar with a mini-fridge, an ice maker, and not least a gas-fired grille. One of the most important aspects of a villa such as this is the privacy of the occupants, and in Allamanda Estate this is achieved by the careful placement of the two guest bedroom suites in a separate pavilion on the far side of the pool. Both have king beds, en suite bathrooms and air-conditioning, and they are linked by a convenient small gallery equipped with a table and cushioned bench seat, a sink, mini-fridge, microwave over and a coffee maker. As elsewhere throughout the villa, tiled floors help to make the most of the cooling trade winds. All four bedrooms at Allamanda Estate are fully screened.

Allamanda Estate has a wonderfully comfortable and inviting traditional charm, this particularly noticeable at night thanks to the subtle indirect lighting from the wood-panelled ceilings. Potted plants and the many pieces of original art further enhance its appeal, while outside the tropical gardens, bounded and delineated by attractive stone walls, are full of many local species of plants, shrubs and trees, making the place a delight for any keen gardener. Nearby attractions include the ruins of an old plantation and, a few minutes’ drive further down the Little Mountain road, the white-sands and turquoise waters at Long Bay for some excellent swimming and snorkeling. Josiah’s Bay, a popular surfing beach, is within 10 minutes’ drive of the villa. Allamanda Estate makes an ideal location for any type of special vacation or get-together, including weddings and honeymoons, anniversaries or family reunions. All of these – and more – can be catered for with special arrangements made in advance, and guests may also bring with them their own personal chef or children’s nanny. It is additionally worth noting that your first night's simple dinner – with wine – and the following morning's continental breakfast are included in Allamanda Estate's rental rate.

Trudi's personal opinion
Allamanda Estate is the perfect choice for guests seeking a peaceful and relaxing vacation in genuinely spacious and comfortable surroundings. It’s set among lush and extensive gardens on a secluded hilltop, and thanks to this wonderful position it offers not only real privacy but also some absolutely amazing panoramic views of the ocean.

This spotless villa, which until recently was the official residence of the British Virgin Islands’ Governor, is imposing but at the same time immensely welcoming. In spite of its size it has an unmistakable home-from-home feel, with eclectic but comfortable furnishings – virtually every room has plenty of deep-cushioned sofas and chairs to sink into – and the kitchen is fully equipped with all the appliances and dinnerware you could possibly need to prepare even the most ambitious of meals.

Not surprisingly, the bedrooms at Allamanda Estate are of an excellent size – and thoughtfully positioned, too. In the main pavilion, for instance, there are two large rooms immediately adjacent to each other, and this could be the perfect solution for children who prefer to be close to their parents. Two additional bedroom suites are located in a separate pavilion on the far side of the pool, providing privacy for all.

For me, a couple of outdoor areas really stand out. Between the two pavilions there’s a covered, poolside verandah that provides peace, tranquility and some welcome shade in an oasis of mature palms and sweet-smelling tropical flowers. Like all the other parts of the villa, this one is both well equipped and comfortably furnished – it even has a dining area and a convenient wet bar. There’s nothing like having all amenities close to hand! The second area I particularly like is the natural stone terrace next to the living-room, with far-reaching, panoramic and truly captivating views overlooking Beef Island and the outlying islands dotted in the warm Caribbean Sea. Where better to enjoy breakfast or a morning coffee while contemplating the day's itinerary?

Outside in the (slightly!) wider world, as it were, Allamanda Estate is conveniently close to Trellis Bay – for the ferry for day trips to Virgin Gorda – or else you can take the free ferry over to Marina Cay for lunch or dinner. On Tortola itself there are a number of top-quality restaurants within just 10–15 minutes’ drive, and the beautiful and usually very quiet beaches at Long Bay and Josiah's Bay are just a short distance away.

Allamanda Estate is, in short, a relaxing and very private property set in delightful gardens, and I’m convinced that you will feel instantly at home the minute you approach this inviting villa. It’s a wonderful choice for a large family with older children, or a group of friends who are looking to spend a memorable vacation in the BVI.
