| BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS (BVI) Water Activities |
Vacations in the British Virgin Islands are usually centred around the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea and have some of the best watersports' facilities available. | |||
| Fishing Both Deep Sea Fishing and Bone Fishing is available throughout the islands. | |||
| Sailing The British Virgin Islands, known as the 'sailing capital of the Caribbean', offer some of the best conditions for sailors of all abilities. The location of the islands, being relatively close to one another, provides the opportunity of sailing to a different island each day. Trade winds are constant at around 10-15 knots. There are a number of companies throughout the islands specialising in Crewed Yacht Charters, Bareboat Yacht Charters and Day Sails. | |||
| Scuba Diving The British Virgin Islands have numerous dive sites, some of the best in the Caribbean, if not the world. The most famous is the 'Wreck of the Rhone' located off Salt Island. The RMS Rhone (Royal Mail Steamer) went down off the island in an 1867 hurricane. Featured in the film version of Peter Benchley's novel, 'The Deep' it is the Caribbean's most spectacular and perfectly preserved wreck. There is a good selection of dive companies in the islands that offer diving and equipment hire. A recommended company, Blue Water Divers, located at Nanny Cay and Soper's Hole, provide excellent instruction. Rendezvous diving (where the dive company arrange to collect you from your charter yacht and return you after the dive) is also readily available. | |||
| Snorkeling With crystal-clear waters, the British Virgin Islands offer some magnificent snorkeling; excellent sites are located from the beaches at Brewers Bay and Smuggler's Cove, to name just two. Norman Island has some of the best sites at 'The Indians' and 'The Caves' - rumoured to be the location of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, 'Treasure Island'. | |||
| Windsurfing There are several companies within the BVI that hire windsurfers and other watersports' equipment. If you charter a bareboat yacht you can usually hire the boards for the duration of your vacation from the charter company. Windsurfing lessons are available from Jeremy at the Cybernet Café located at Trellis Bay, Beef Island. He claims to have you up and running in a couple of hours! He also hires out other watersports' equipment. | |||
